The crossing
Two variants leave Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port: the high Route de Napoléon over the open Pyrenean ridges via Orisson, and the lower road route through the Valcarlos valley. The high route is closed during the winter season for safety — check current conditions with the pilgrim office and follow official guidance before choosing your variant.

Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is the traditional starting point of the Camino Francés, and its pilgrim office issues the credential (pilgrim passport) stamped along the way. Weather over the pass changes quickly in any season; carry water and check the forecast the evening before.

Real Colegiata de Santa María de Roncesvalles
churchCrowds: not yet measuredThe collegiate church at Roncesvalles, with origins in the early 13th century under Sancho VII of Navarre, has received pilgrims completing the Pyrenean crossing for some eight hundred years. The pass itself carries an older memory: the Battle of Roncevaux Pass of 778, retold and transformed in the medieval Song of Roland.
